| Was born in Sudan 1939,
he was known among his friends & the art community by two names,(Omer
Khairy) given to him by his family, (George Edward) was chosen by the
artist, may be it was a way for him to deify his reality!
He attended the College of Fine and Applied Art, Khartoum from 1957-1959,
then he left hoping to travel to Italy where he was awarded a scholarship
to study Fine Art at the Academe of Fine Art in Roam, he was extremely
disappointed when he knew that the scholarship was given by the Art School
management & dean office, at that time, to one of the teaching assistants
at the college! He abandoned the Art School but never abandoned his art.Khairy/Edward
throughout his life used black ink on untreated wood panels in most of
his artwork beside oil colors and any media he could find; he exhibited
his work in more than 50 exhibitions in the Sudan and abroad.
A great deal of Omer Khairy/George Edward work is in private collections
around the world & in public collections as well, some of his work
is at the College of Fine and Applied Art, Khartoum, Sudan; British Council,
Khartoum, Sudan; French Cultural Center, Khartoum, Sudan; Goethe Institute,
Khartoum, Sudan; Shibrain Art Center, Khartoum;
He had numerous murals surrounded the walls of the old building of the
National Council of Arts & Letters in Khartoum, but was destroyed
by one of the NIF ministers in the early 90s.
Khairy/Edward died in April 12th 1999 after a battle with cancer.
