Artist Statement:

It is very hard for me as a woman who grew up in Sudan to feel "free" of all imposed obligations towards tradition, religion and society. I paint to explore ideas and express thoughts and impulses on women's issues.
In my opinion producing art in all its forms, is about being "absolutely free". By making artwork, I hope to achieve that feeling of 'true freedom'.

Most of the time, I start thinking about my intended work long before I approach the canvas. I then make sketches using charcoals, pencils, or sometimes ink before starting on the oil colors. The conceptualization process takes the longest time as I mull over all the details of the work in my mind.

My work in general reflects states of the struggle, agony, suffering and hope of Sudanese women. I had and still have an interest in ancient Sudanese history, conceptually and aesthetically. In the Merotic era, queens were powerful rulers. This gives me hope and, at the same time, makes me sad about what is happening now in Sudan under the Islamic rule of systemic suppression of women; as if we are going backwards!

This body of work is about protesting self-censorship and all forms of censorship, while expressing my dreams and wishes for a better life for women, particularly Sudanese women.
