Angaza Afrika
African Art Now
15 May – 30 June 2008
“Africa is as much a global phenomenon as a continent.”
Chris Spring
The exhibition brings together major works by 12 artists who best
represent the innovative and dynamic artistic practices across the
African continent and the African diasporas and launches the book,
Angaza Afrika – African Art Now - a highly visual survey of
contemporary African art compiled by Christopher Spring and published
by Laurence King.
Angaza Afrika, translated from the Swahili to mean ‘Shed
light on Africa’ or ‘Look around Africa’,
is comprehensive in its range. Each work will be a stunning visual
and physical manifestation of the artists’ energy and spirit,
such as Rachid Korachï’s Sufi- inspired black and white
appliqué work ‘Mystics of the 18th Century,’
and the beautiful work of South African artist Karel Nel, who sets
vast leaves from the Coco de Mer palms in atmospheric, elemental
architectural spaces.
Other featured artists include the innovative print and collage
maker Mohamed
Omer Bushara, well known Sudanese painters
Ibrahim El Salahi & Hassan
Musa, Romuald Hazoumé, whose immense installation
Dream (2007), consisting of a boat made from petrol canisters, placed
in front of a panoramic photograph won the documenta 12 prize; El
Anatsui, who with his magnificent cloths made from thousands of
glimmering bottle tops was one of the highlights of the 52nd Venice
Biennale and who will transform Channel 4’s 50ft logo, situated
in front of their London Headquarters, with an installation in June
2008; Owusu-Ankomah, whose drawings were chosen by Giorgio Armani
for his Emporio Armani (PRODUCT) RED capsule collection and Abdoulaye
Konaté who has been shortlisted for the Artes Mundi 2008
Prize.

Hassaan
Ali is an award-winning painter based in Cairo
who has had numerous solo and joint art exhibitions across the
globe. The theme of Hassaan’s art exhibition is “Dislocation
(2)” dealing with the trauma of war and dislocation
in war-torn societies like Darfur. During December 2006, Hassaan
had participated in the international art exhibition at the
Cairo Biennale, and his entry in that exhibition -- a mural
painting (3m x 2m) comprising of six pieces -- won the excellence
award.
Hassaan’s Asmara exhibition is, therefore, a continuation
of that theme. This meshes well with PCHA’s mission to
promote peace-building activities in the Horn of Africa by highlighting
through art and cultural exchanges the plight of war victims.
A major concern of Hassaan Ali’s art is also the human
rights of the dispossessed.
Hassaan is of Nubian origin from North Sudan, and the fact that
the homeland of the Nubians was flooded about 40 years ago to
make way for Egypt’s High Dam, resulting in the displacement
of the Nubian people from their original homeland has had a
major impact on his artistic vision which seeks to highlight
the pain and trauma of displacement. This pain and trauma of
displacement as a result of wars, famines and ill-conceived
development projects has been affecting peoples and communities
across the Horn of Africa region. |
|
| Hassaan, had previously
exhibited in Eritrea: 1991 at the Department of Culture, 1997
at the Alliance Française, and 2005 at the Arrag Art
Gallery of Massawa. This time around his art exhibition will
be held at The Gallery, along with a week-long art workshop
to be conducted by Hassaan Ali to a selected group of young
Eritrean artists. The art workshop, co-sponsored by the Cultural
Affairs Bureau (PFDJ), The American Embassy and The British
Council, will be held from February 23 to March 3, 2007, enabling
Hassaan to share his wide-ranging artistic vision and experiences
with the next generation of Eritrean artists. |

Sudanese Sculptor Showing Retrospective at Short North’s Gypsy Café
COLUMBUS, OH- May 2nd , 2006-Sudanese born artist Mohamad-saeed Omer has covered the Gypsy Café with his sculptures, paintings, wood carved relieves and an installation.
Located at 874 N High St, the one-man retrospective features work created over the past four years and will be on display until the end of August 2006.
Highlights include a 5’ high freestanding totem-like wood piece based on an abstraction of a circle form from a tree trunk and an installation titled Books Volcano that can be seen from the street through the large glass window of the café. Oil paintings, digital prints, and relieves dot any available wall space throughout the entire café. The works are tinged with an African flavor, based on native structures such as the mud house, legendary singers such as Hamza Al-Din, and bull imagery laced with a unique script/ marking system personally designed by the artist.
Omer moved to Columbus 8 years ago and completed his BFA studies at the Ohio State University College of the Arts. He is presented as part of the Café’s on-going featured artist series. The show is a bit of a farewell for this Columbus treasure, as he is moving to New York City next month.

David's
journey unfolds across America. White is black, black is white.
"David/Dafidi" as an "object character"
on stage unifies all realities in culture and thought. Based
on the philosophy "Life is a Performance," "David/Dafidi"
is a unique, experiential, and enchanting performance that
admixes art, people, and culture together on stage and in
the community. "David/Dafidi" combines "Dafidi's"
(a West African Yoruba name for David) life experiences, the
historical character of "King David," Michelangelo's
sculpture of "David," and a new artistic and philosophical
understanding of "David as Dafidi" in our contemporary
living. Set at the crossroads of sacred, physical, old, and
new realities, "David/Dafidi" features 256 "object
characters" including music, dance, philosophy, art objects,
and audience interaction. "David/Dafidi" uses America
as a stage and will tour through sixteen cities across the
country. |

Call for proposals for Art Exhibit at Georgetown
University
Deadline: June 1, 2003
From Sondra Hale
The Sudan Studies Association and SSUK renew their call for proposals
from artists for exhibit material at Georgetown University. I have
agreed, as an SSA Board member and Sudanese art critical studies
person, to assist in the coordination of the art exhibit for the
third international meeting. Individual works of art suitable for
display are encouraged and will be part of a group exhibit space
for the duration of the conference.
Please note that we are providing the space only. Please think of
me as a coordinator and contact person, not as a curator. We do
not have the labor and resources to mount/frame or hang/install
the works. Each artist will hang/install his/her own works in the
space provided. We plan to divide the space equally among artists,
that is, as equitably as possible, considering the differences in
size and art forms with which we will be dealing. We will be checking
out the dimensions of the room and will need your dimensions and
any other specifications.
Please send proposals for art work to be displayed (and
dimensions) to:
Prof. Sondra Hale sonhale@ucla.edu
